Starting

Well, I am going to start diving and sharing my experiences in class and in any dive experiences I have.

The first time I dove was in the pool at St. Louis Park High School in St. Louis Park, MN. It was the coolest experience and I have always remembered it. The person that was mostly responsible for this was a man called Mr. Weineo (Never knew his first name and I hope I spelled his last name correctly). He was a physical education teacher at the time and actually taught me how to swim. I was a klutz in the water, and he helped me loose my fear of it and I became an accomplished swimmer. It was the only thing I ever did that got me above a C in gym class. As a result of his help in swimming I tried a one-time dive class and was thrilled at the sense of freedom and peace I found at the bottom of the pool.

I've kept that experience in my head for the past too many years and now that my wife and I are going to Hawaii every year on vacation, I am going to step back and start my dive training.

Last year I did what was called a resort dive and couldn't complete the dive. Different from my experience back in High School was the sense that I could not breath because my lungs were not expanding. I had that weight belt on and a wet-suit and some other straps and I just could not expand my lungs. I remember my dive in the high school pool where my gear was loose (actually I kept hitting the back of my head on the regulator).

There is a dive shop across the street from where I live and when I told the guy about my resort dive, he said that the equipment was not properly fitted, and that with a few classes I should get my sea-legs back so to speak.

So, we go on vacation in July, and I will start certification classes probably in February or March.

I'll be sharing my experiences and thoughts as I go along and if anyone has anything to share about their diving experiences, please feel free to chime in.

See ya!
